Haunted on Bourbon Street by Deanna Chase
Publisher’s Description: Jade loves her new apartment-until a ghost joins her in the shower. When empath Jade Calhoun moves into an apartment above a strip bar on Bourbon Street, she expects life to get interesting. What she doesn’t count on is making friends with an exotic dancer, attracting a powerful spirit, and developing feelings for Kane, her sexy landlord. Being an empath has never been easy on Jade’s relationships. It’s no wonder she keeps her gift a secret. But when the ghost moves from spooking Jade, to terrorizing Pyper, the dancer, it’s up to Jade to use her unique ability to save her. Except she’ll need Kane’s help-and he’s betrayed her with a secret of his own-to do it. Can she find a way to trust him and herself before Pyper is lost?
Nervous Nellie’s nervousness necessitates knowledge of the novel (in other words, SPOILERS!).
Main characters: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ Jade Calhoun is an empath that is uncomfortable with her gift. Kane is the HOT strip club owner and romantic interest. Pyper Rayne is Kane’s partner in business and is haunted by an evil spirit. Pyper and Kane are best friends since college when she stole his girlfriend. (I like that story – Kane and Pyper tease each other about it now, but it was a fairly sensitive subject back then). I like Jade-she’s tough but she doesn’t isn’t as knowing about the paranormal world as I thought she’d be. Kane is a dream walker and fits with Jade perfectly.
Other characters: ♥ ♥ ♥ Bobbie is the ghost that infiltrates Jade’s dreams and turns them into an x-rated orgy. *sigh* Her nickname for him is Mr. Sexy. I think she could have come up with a better nick name, but what do I know? He’s never been in my dreams! Anyway, he’s not there to harm Jade because he thinks she’s his wife from 30 years ago; I guess Jade looks like her. Cat is Jade’s best friend and best supporter when she isn’t being blinded by love. Cat dates Jade’s ex who calls Jade a freak every time he can (jerk). Ian is the ghost hunter that is hell bent on helping Jade with her ghost, but mostly just wants to experience paranormal ghost-y type stuff. He tries to be a romantic interest, but the sparks don’t fly…..unless you count the jealousy that Kane throws off. Bea is the proprietor of “Herbal Connections” and is a strong player in the paranormal world. There are other characters, but that’s a strong sampling.
World: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ NOLA. What more is there to say? Smack dab in the middle of the french quarter. You all know New Orleans is very well known for it’s ghosts so this is a perfect setting-especially the french quarter.
Story: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ Jade and Pyper are haunted by ghosts. Jade’s ghost appears in her dreams every night and gives her pleasure that drives her crazy – a good crazy, just to be clear. Bobbie a/k/a “Mr. Sexy” is a loving light entity that showers Jade with comfort, tenderness and a whole lot of lovin’. Pyper’s ghost is more vicious. He beats her in her dreams and terrorizes her whenever she sleeps. He is a scary dark entity that is psychotic and dangerous. Kane is the owner of Wicked – a strip bar in the same building as the coffee house that Jade works – and now lives. Kane is very alpha male, but Jade puts him in his place because she’s just as strong and opinionated. Most of the story is Jade exploring her gift, worried about people finding out about her gift and trying to avoid entanglements with Kane. Kane is the sexy, good looking, protective hottie that is trying every trick he can think of to get Jade to fall for him. In the end there is the prerequisite battle between the forces of good and evil (I love that part) and there is no cliffhanger. Jade finds that she finally has a multi-person family which she has been looking for ever since she was young and her mother disappeared.
Cover: ♥ ♥ ♥ Don’t be fooled. It looks like a funny little fluffy book, but it’s really a darn good paranormal romance.
Narrator: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ Traci Odom This chick can narrate! She puts a spin on the southern accent AND changes the voices so they don’t all sound the same. She is talented and I will put her on my short list of fantastic narrators.
Overall: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ It was a fantastic audio. I was enthralled by Traci’s voices and Deanna’s characters. I already bought book two in audio. I’m starting it in the morning – just in case you happen to be curious.
