Immortal Creatures…who wants to live forever?

Most Interesting ManDo you ever actually think about the creatures that you read about?  I do.  How could they exist?  Do they exist?  I don’t know, but if I did, I’m not sure I wouldn’t be a jibbering idiot hiding in a corner.  If vampires were sparkly, no problem.  If ogres were like Shrek, I’d be okay with that.  However, I don’t read books like that.  On occasion I read a vampire romance and no matter how hot the story is, my brain still wonders about things.

I wonder about what vampires or werewolves talk about to their human 23 year old love interests after they’ve spent 25 years together.  They supposedly mate forever.  That’s a lot of couple time, don’t you think?  People change and I don’t care how old you are, you will change.  Boredom will come into play.  Life will come into play. After that hot vampire or werewolf catches his/her love interest, will the interest still be there?  We are talking about 200 to 1600 year old creatures, here.  Are they only interested in the thrill of the chase?  I’m sure they are looking for that adrenaline rush because they’ve seen everything and done almost everything except die.

I wonder about all that happens within those years of the immortal’s life. The history and inventions they have lived through plus the frustration of stupid humans making the same mistakes over and over, has to be incredible.  I wonder about watching human loved ones grow old and die?  I’ve read romances where the Hero is so devastated by his loved ones dying for over 6 generations and he keeps on ticking. Not sure I believe that.  I’d think you get used to it.  Is that cold?  Maybe, but probably realistic.  Back in the olden goldie age when life was hard and people only lived til they were 40, was a time where mothers lost children at a high rate.  Sickness, injury or maybe stillbirth. They had to protect themselves mentally or they’d crack up.  Anyway, a person has to change simply for survival.  Improvise, Overcome and Adapt – isn’t that what the Marines tell us?

Dracula-A-Funny-Vampire-From-RomaniaOf course just surviving as a werewolf or vampire or whatever other creature isn’t where it stops. You probably have the hierarchy.  Pledge to a dominant and elder vampire, werewolf, whatever.  Take orders from above. I can’t imagine that’s easy if you are like me.  If I wanted to be in the military, I would have joined.  I don’t want someone higher up the food chain to threaten me with harm if I don’t do as he/she says. I don’t want to be the lowest werewolf in the pack that has to show their throat in a gesture of submission.   That has to be how a creature would start his/her life. You know darned good and well that no one starts out at the top.  There is grappling up the ladder, climbing over bodies and maybe even burying a few. I don’t want to have to be planning and strategizing to get the upper hand.  I’m not even going to delve into the ego or power trips that would come with the supremacy of being immortal.  Power=Corruption?  I think I’ve heard that somewhere.  That’s not my style and anyway, I’m too lazy.

I know that living forever would be very interesting – the things that I could learn.  Research I could do.  Places I could see and explore. If I was the right person with the right kind of mind that would be able to accept change and adapt to new ways of life, I could do it.  From working with/for the public for all of my adult life, I’ve not met very many people that could do that.  Would I like to live forever? Hmmmmm….. I don’t know.  Would you?

  1. One of my biggest issues with paranormal romances is the age differences. It’s hard to believe a were or vamp that is hundreds of years old is genuinely interested in someone in their early 20’s. I’m in my 30’s and can get irritated with some people in their early 20’s. How can someone old and experience stand to be around them? Mating for life especially when talking about immortals is insane. It could never work. Most people can’t make things work for a normal life span.

I don’t think all immortals would get used to death, but the ones who don’t probably go crazy. Most likely they’d either end their life or do something reckless which would cause their death. The ones who do live a long time would become cold and probably avoid close relationships to avoid grief. How else would they be able to survive?

  2. I wonder about the age difference too..I mean it would be like a 20 yr old interested in a young child..what would you talk about? After all you can’t spend all your time in bed even that would get boring after several hundred years don’t you think? And yes I like to read about all these supernatural creatures but really it would scare me silly to meet one for real.
