The New Kid by Eileen Wilks

The New Kid

Welcome to Saturday Shorts where we feature short stories and novellas. This free short story in the World of the Lupi series by Eileen Wilks gives readers a glimpse into Rule Turner’s childhood days as he attempts to integrate into a human high school.  This is a pretty timely story, dealing with bullying, the cruel social structure of high school, and being true to your own nature.

Title:  “The New Kid
Author:  Eileen Wilks
Series: World of the Lupi prequel

Publisher’s Description: This short story takes places in Rule’s past, specifically January 10, 1976 during his Sophomore year of high school in a small town near Clanhome. It’s a fun look into a time when Rule wasn’t Lu Nuncio yet and was just learning how to integrate with humans.

Possible spoilers beyond this point.

“You know about cats, right? They’re small and smart and sneaky, and they know they’re the coolest of the cool. They don’t think there’s something wrong with them because they can’t punch out an ox.”

“The New Kid” made me like Rule’s father, the Rho of Rule’s pack, much better than I have liked him throughout the rest of the series.

badge4v4This is a really quick and meaningful read.  I don’t think you’d even have to know anything about the World of the Lupi series to understand its message.  If you do read the series, this story can be read at any time.
