Grave New Day by Lina Gardiner

I read this book in 2010 and thought it was the end of the series – you know how it goes – author or publisher decides the characters don’t need to go on to the next book EVEN THOUGH IT WAS A HUGE CLIFFHANGER! Now, out of the blue, I see that Grave Expectations, Jess Vandermire #4 will be published August 31, 2015.  In order to make sense of book #4, I needed to go back and read book #3.  In case you need to be reminded like I did, here you go…

Nervous Nellie says…

Nervous_Nellie_100John Brittain is dead. The grief spilling from the first pages of this book is palpable… at least for me.  I’m a sucker for those sad male protagonists that are killed off and then resurrected.  As long as it’s all in the same book.  When authors use their “hook” at the end of a book to kill off a character, that will always send me to my therapist with a distinct possibly of nervous breakdown.  If it happens in the same book, it’s not so bad.  In fact, a few tears cleanse the soul… I’m told.

Anyway, this story is pretty darn good.  It’s your typical romance, but it’s a “Law and Order” episode too.  It has all the ear marks of a mystery with Murphy’s law in full swing. And include personal misery.  And battle.  And of course you need to throw saving the world in there somewhere.  That’s the best part – the saving the world part.

badge4v4Jess has half a soul which her brother, Father Vandermire, helped save.  Her soul becomes endangered when she loses her focus after John was killed. Then John comes back to life to be with Jess… awwwww… and they have to figure out how to fight Old World vamps that want to bring the first vampire back from the beyond, turn the humans into cattle and rule the world.  Weird things happen, John becomes a leaner, meaner fighting machine and Jess turns human.  Huh.  All in due course, the battle rages and all turns out for the best.

And then comes the #$*&^%* cliffhanger.  5 years I’ve waited to find out what Regent finds out at the Vatican.  5 years I’ve waited with Jess & Britt for Regent’s plane to land so we can find out what was so important he couldn’t divulge it over the phone.  5 years and now, August 31, 2015 we finally get to find out!! Whoo hoo!!!! I can’t wait.
