Likes: First of all, look at that cover! LOOK AT IT! It’s beautiful! I received an advanced reader’s copy of the novel and the pre-release proofs included were beautiful even in black and white so I can only imagine how breath taking they will be in the final copy of the novel.

I love the beings in this story! Kitsune, Tengu, and a whole host of other supernatural creatures from Japanese lore make an appearance and is a sure fire way to peak my interest. The melding of present day Japan and the feudalist ideology is brilliantly done.

A few years ago I was introduced to the anime Inuyasha. I’m hoping at least some of you know who that is, but Shiro reminded me a lot of him. Emi and Shiro’s romance is subtle but sometimes you need that in a story. I look forward to their relationship growing.

Dislikes: There wasn’t much I didn’t like in this novel. The beginning is a little confusing if you don’t have a basic knowledge of Japanese myths and legends. While the rituals of the past and the current times are beautifully melded, it is a shock to the system when it seems like we are pulled into present times, even though we’ve actually been there all along!

badge5v4I could rave about this book for days so I’m going to give it five ofuda 😉

About the author

annette_marie_author_photo_600x900_blueAnnette Marie is the author of the Amazon best-selling YA urban fantasy series Steel & Stone, which includes the 2015 Goodreads Choice Award nominee Yield the Night. Her first love is fantasy, a limitless realm of creativity where she can break all the boring rules of real life, but fast-paced urban fantasy, bold heroines, and tantalizing forbidden romances are her guilty pleasures. She proudly admits she has a thing for dragons, and her editor has politely inquired as to whether she intends to include them in every book.

Annette lives in the frozen winter wasteland of northern Alberta, Canada (okay, it’s not quite that bad). She shares her life with her remarkably patient, comparatively sensible husband and their furry minion of darkness—sorry, cat—Caesar. When not writing, she can be found elbow-deep in one art project or another while blissfully ignoring all adult responsibilities.

Nell’s Gossip and Sunday Book Hunt 10.30

Welcome to One Book Two. I love gossip and what gossip is any better than book or author gossip? Normally, I’m not one to go around repeating rumors, so be sure you listen close the first time.Nervous_Nellie_100

It’s amazing, but it’s been pretty quiet around the One Book Two site as of late.  Since that is the situation, instead of gossip this week, I’m going to let you in on the anticipated new releases for November.  It’s not like we don’t already have a mountain of TBR books, but who can resist?

New York Times bestselling author Seanan McGuire’s Sleepover finds half-succubus Elsie Harrington kidnapped by a group of desperate teenage boys. Not for anything “weird.” They just need her to rescue a little girl from the boogeyman. No biggie.

In New York Times bestselling Kevin J. Anderson’s Eye of Newt, Zombie P.I. Dan Shamble’s latest client is a panicky lizard missing an eye who thinks someone wants him dead. But the truth is that someone only wants him for a very special dinner…

And New York Times bestselling author Rob Thurman’s infernally heroic Caliban Leandros takes a trip down memory lane as he deals wih some overdue—and nightmarish—vengeance involving some quite nasty Impossible Monsters.

Agent_Annie_100Agent Annie says…

The King of Average by Gary Schwartz is OK. The idea of the story is clever and the author writes some interesting turns of phrase, but I felt the work to “get the pun” overwhelmed the flow of the story. I also thought that one of the final chapters, “A-Ha,” was a bit unbelievable. James had to wrestle with his own demons of self-doubt and worthlessness in a yurt hut and that seemed too adult in nature for an 8-12 year reader to understand or be comfortable with.

I loaned this book to a friend of mine who asked her 10 year old to read it. He reported that it seemed really scary after just the first couple chapters. I hadn’t really thought about the first part where James experiences a mother who hates him and a father who’s abandoned him and how that might be difficult for a kid who hasn’t been introduced to these concepts to be able to process them within this story’s framework.

badge2v4The language of the book is too light and playful for the themes that are explored: abandonment, self-doubt, being lost, etc. I feel that the discordance between the themes and the language are what turned me off the book. I’m very interested in hearing another kid’s opinion of the book, so we may have a mystery reviewer at some point in the future, but for now I give this book 2 stars.

This Week’s Question

What are some of your favorite creepy/twisted/dark covers?

Agent Annie says…

I’ve always thought the cover of VC AndrewsFlowers in the Attic cover from the 80’s was creepy. It had that old Victorian house with the girl’s face in the top window. The story itself is pretty creepy and I think the cover design really captures the darkness, the weird factor and the looming house that took over those children’s lives in the story.

Flowers in the Attic

Nervous Nellie says…Nervous_Nellie_100

The covers I don’t like usually ends up being the books I don’t read. So, instead of creepy for me I am going with darkly awesome.

Any of the covers from The Inquisitor series, The Whisper King series, and also the Hellequin Chronicles series.

The Whisper King

Luna Lovebooks says…  Luna_Lovebooks_100

Being a horror fan I have plenty of creepy covers to choose from but I decided to go with Project Cain by Geoffrey Girard. Hopefully I don’t give too much away here, but the main character Jeff has a secret. He wasn’t really born, he was made with Jeffrey Dahmer’s DNA. I think the cover captures the creepy vibes from the story as well as Jeff’s struggle with his identity.

Project Cain

Ruby Lee says… Ruby_Lee 100

I’m Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid has caught my eye a few times.

Also, I always found the original covers of the Sookie Stackhouse series disturbing, which is why I didn’t start reading them until it was strongly suggested that I was missing out on a good series. They really spooked me. I don’t know why.

Dead as a doornail

Percy Procrastinator says…Percy_Procrastinator_100

Since going electronic, I don’t see many covers anymore! Well, more like it’s limited. I think Iron Druid, Libriomancer, and Dresden Files are the only ones I have seen in recent years.

Skin Game

the-awesome the-last-battleThe Awesome Eva Darrows: For such a kinda lighthearted summary of this book (which I haven’t read yet but fully intend to), this cover weirds me out.
MythOS – Kelly McCullough – Even though I love this series (and Christian McGrath) the cover of Ravirn’s fourth adventure has always kinda given me the willies. I think it’s the AI in the corner, plus the glowing green eyes that Ravirn has while he’s looking right at you.
Chronicles of Narnia: The Last Battle (Book 7) – Unicorns are innocent, or at least they’re supposed to be? This one always gave me bad vibes when I was younger because the image of a beautiful unicorn with blood dripping from its horn? CREEPY if you ask me.

Invested_Ivana_100Invested Ivana says…

I’m starting to believe Faith Hunter can do no wrong.  Well, “write” no wrong, at least.  Curse on the Land is another fabulous urban fantasy novel featuring Nell Ingram, Rick LeFleur, and the PsyLed team.

In this installment, the team is investigating some mysterious deaths that seem to be connected to sentient powers deep within the earth. Several times in the story, Nell, as the narrator, is describing the experience of communing with the earth. Often times, she tells her team that the experience can’t be described in words—except that, since this is a book, this is exactly what she is doing for the reader. That made me grin.  Yet it couldn’t have been easy to find words to describe these experiences in a way that made sense to the reader, so kudos to Faith for that.

Some of the more interesting side stories in this book deal with Occam’s feeling about Nell and about Rick LaFleur’s magical handicap—his inability to turn into the werepanther he is at the full moon. Ooh, boy, will there be some fans excited about THAT plot line. I gotta wonder if Rick’s issues will be the focus of the next Soulwood book or if any of it will spill over into a future Jane Yellowrock book.

badge4v4The ending—well, really the cause of the mystery Nell and her group are solving—is pretty complicated and I’m not quite sure I grasped it all the first time around.  But, that’s what the audiobooks are for!  I pick up different details from the audio than I do from the text, which makes the reread (re-listen?) value awesome.

If you liked the first book, Blood of the Earth, I’d certainly recommend picking up Curse on the Land.  There are no vampires in this installment, but there are certainly characters and story lines that relate back to the Jane Yellowrock series, and Jane fans are NOT going to want to miss this one. 😉

Nervous Nell says….

This is a urban fantasy, no sex, lots of blood, lots of magic, plenty of death (but no one we know) and a cameo from Nervous_Nellie_100Jane Yellowrock.  There is no cliffhanger and maybe a tiny hint of romance.  I listened to this book via audiobook.

Faith Hunter is one of my favorite authors.  Khristine Hvam is one of my favorite narrators.  Nell Ingram is now one of my favorite heroines.  It took finishing this book before I was totally sold on Nell.  I kept thinking that no one can be as good as Jane Yellowrock and while that is true, no one can now be as good as Nell Ingram.  Both women are strong in their own way and talented in different areas.  Nell is an incredible investigator and even though she does go “rodeo” as Ricky Bo calls it, she does know how to take one for the team.  She uses her upbringing to her advantage and my favorite parts of the story is when she reverts to church-speak to gain confidences of witnesses.

Yes, Ricky Bo is still in this series.  I know, I know.  Ricky Bo is Nell’s boss so where else would he be?  Well, Rick badge5v4plays more of a role than boss in this book.  I got to see more about the agony that his were-taint is causing him.  I nearly felt sorry for the man.  Nearly.  He still broke Jane’s heart, but now I know how much he’s really suffering and how scary and uncertain his existence really is.

Seriously, this was a really good book.  Khristine Hvam is a top shelf narrator and even though she does narrate the Jane Yellowrock, she modulates her voice enough to distinguish between Jane and Nell.  That, to me, is incredible talent.  If you like Jane Yellowrock, please give this series a shot.  I was skeptical at first, just because it featured Ricky Bo, but Nell outshines all the characters in the book and she’s brilliant.

Our reviews in this series…

If you like this book…

…you might try the Jane Yellowrock series, of course; the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs, or the Shifter series by Rachel Vincent.
