Nell’s Next Month New Release List
New releases. We all love, love, love them. The next in a series. The start of a new series by a favorite author. A new world to escape into. A new author whose writing will make you fall in love. I love new releases and I want to share my excitement for what books are being released in February.
#1. Melissa Olson is a fabulous writer. She writes two favorite series of mine: Boundary Magic and Scarlett Bernard. She’s coming out with a new series, Disrupted Magic. Scarlett Bernard is in this series but also features a character that does “walk-ons” in Boundary Magic series. I especially love how the worlds and characters run together – it makes me feel like it’s my own little community. It will be released February 7, 2017.
Title: Midnight Curse
Author: Melissa Olson
Series: Disrupted Magic #1
Description: Scarlett Bernard is used to cleaning up messes. As a human who cancels out any magic around her, Scarlett’s job is to keep the supernatural world hidden—at any cost.
On the eve of the Vampire Trials, a two-day tribunal that allows the otherworldly community to air their grievances, Scarlett receives a blood-soaked message from Molly, her estranged former roommate. Molly, a vampire, had been living with twelve human college students…and in one terrible night, she slaughtered them all.
Scarlett believes Molly’s been set up, but no one else in the Old World agrees with her. And the true perpetrator is determined to make sure Molly goes on trial for the massacre—the penalty for which is death.
With less than two days to prove her friend’s innocence, Scarlett calls on former LAPD detective Jesse Cruz to help her dig into Molly’s past. But no one—Molly included—wants Scarlett and Jesse to bring the terrible truth to light.
#2 Hungry Ghosts is the continuation of the Eric Carter series by Stephen Blackmoore. Fans have been waiting for a couple of years for this next release, but we are all happy about the dedication the author shows to his work. Hungry Ghosts was ready but the author felt it could be better, so he trashed it and started over. I appreciate the honesty and the gamble Stephen Blackmoore showed when he could have just released a book. Now he’s about to release A BOOK!
Bad enough he’s the unwilling husband to the patron saint of death, Santa Muerte, but now her ex, the Aztec King of the dead, Mictlantecuhtli has come back and it turns out that Carter and he are swapping places. As Mictlantecuhtli breaks loose of his prison of jade Carter is slowly turning to stone.
To make matters worse both gods are trying to get Carter to assassinate the other, but only one of them can be telling him the truth. And whichever god is left standing Carter’s likely to suffer the consequences.
Carter’s solution? Kill them both.
If he wants to get out of this situation with his soul intact he’ll have to go to Mictlan, the Aztec land of the dead, and take down a couple of death gods while facing down the worst the place has to offer him: his own sins.
#3 The Wrong Dead Guy by Richard Kadrey. Now, this author doesn’t need me to promote his books, but if you like his humor, you’ll appreciate the heads up that this book will be released on February 28, 2017.
Title: The Wrong Dead Guy
Author: Richard Kadrey
Series: Another Coop Heist #2
Description: In this fast-paced sequel to The Everything Box—the second entry in New York Times bestselling author Richard Kadrey’s comedic supernatural series—chaos ensues when Coop and the team at DOPS steal a not-quite-dead and very lovesick ancient Egyptian mummy wielding some terrifying magic.
Coop, a master thief sort of gone legit, saved the world from an ancient doomsday device—heroism that earned him a gig working for the Department of Peculiar Science, a fearsome top secret government agency that polices the odd and strange. Now Woolrich, Coop’s boss at the DOPS, has Coop breaking into a traveling antiquities show to steal a sarcophagus containing the mummy of a powerful Egyptian wizard named Harkhuf. With the help of his pals Morty, Giselle, and a professor that’s half-cat, half-robotic octopus, Coop pulls off the heist without a hitch.
It’s not Coop’s fault that when DOPS opened the sarcophagus they didn’t find the mummy they were expecting. Well, it was the right mummy, but it wasn’t exactly dead—and now it’s escaped, using a type of magic the organization hasn’t encountered before. Being a boss, Woolrich blames his underling for the screw-up and wants Coop to find the missing Harkhuf and make it right, pronto.
Digging into Harkhuf’s history, Coop thinks the mummy is hunting for an ancient magical manuscript that will help him bring his old lover back to life.
Which wouldn’t be so bad if she wasn’t a warrior sorceress hell-bent on conquering the world with her undead armies.
Coop would very much like to run from the oncoming chaos. It’s one thing to steal a mummy, but another to have to deal with head-hunting bureaucrats, down-on-their-luck fortune tellers, undead mailroom clerks, and a rather unimpressed elephant. Unfortunately, there’s nowhere to run. If he wants the madness to stop, he’s going to have to suck it up and play hero one more time. But if Coop manages to save the world AGAIN, he’s definitely going to want a lot of answers. And a raise.
#4. Again, this next author doesn’t need me to plug her book, but she is one of my favorites, so it behooves me to let you know. This book will be released February 7, 2017.
Title: Echoes in Death
Author: J.D. Robb
Series: In Death #44
Description: As NY Lt. Eve Dallas and her billionaire husband Roarke are driving home, a young woman—dazed, naked, and bloody—suddenly stumbles out in front of their car. Roarke slams on the brakes and Eve springs into action.
Daphne Strazza is rushed to the ER, but it’s too late for her husband Dr. Anthony Strazza. A brilliant orthopedic surgeon, he now lies dead amid the wreckage of his obsessively organized town house, his three safes opened and emptied. Daphne would be a valuable witness, but in her terror and shock, the only description of the perp she can offer is repeatedly calling him “the devil”…
While it emerges that Dr. Strazza was cold, controlling, and widely disliked, this is one case where the evidence doesn’t point to the spouse. So Eve and her team must get started on the legwork, interviewing everyone from dinner-party guests to professional colleagues to caterers, in a desperate race to answer some crucial questions:
What does the devil look like? And where will he show up next?
#5 Amy Braun has been working like a demon to keep us all wanting more of the Dark Sky series. The unfortunate thing is that this is the last book in this series. Obsidian Sky releases February 7, 2017. That’s going to be one hell of a busy reading day for me!!

#6 on the list is Kim Harrison‘s The Turn from the Hollows series—-the prequel to the Hollows and the story of how the supernats came out of the closet and everyone stopped eating tomatoes. It will release on February 7, 2017.
Title: The Turn
Author: Kim Harrison
Description: Kim Harrison returns to her beloved Hollows series with The Turn, the official prequel to the series that will introduce fans and readers to a whole new side of Rachel Morgan’s world as they’ve never seen it before!
Can science save us when all else fails?
Trisk and her hated rival, Kalamack, have the same goal: save their species from extinction.
Death comes in the guise of hope when a genetically modified tomato created to feed the world combines with the government’s new tactical virus, giving it an unexpected host and a mode of transport. Plague takes the world, giving the paranormal species an uncomfortable choice to stay hidden and allow humanity to die, or to show themselves in a bid to save them.
Under accusations of scientific misconduct, Trisk and Kal flee across a plague-torn United States to convince leaders of the major paranormal species to save their supposedly weaker kin, but not everyone thinks humanity should be saved.
Kal surreptitiously works against her as Trisk fights the prejudices of two societies to prove that not only does humanity have something to offer, but that long-accepted beliefs against women, dark magic, and humanity itself can turn to understanding; that when people are at their worst that the best show their true strength, and that love can hold the world together as a new balance is found.
