Author Announcements and Book News

Listen up! New Author News right here! Right NOW!  Come on in, grab a cup of coffee and read the announcements!

Yesterday was the last day for the sale price of Blue Curse by Brad Magnarella.  If you missed it, sad face.  If you really aren’t into reading and rather into listening, have I got news for you!!

Blue Curse will be in negotiation for an audiobook that could be released as early as January 2018!  That is so exciting!  I have it straight from the author that Patrick Cronin, Prof Croft‘s voice in his own series, could possibly be the voice of Captain Jason Wolfe!  Why is it so exciting? Because this narrator is fab, that’s why.  Prof Croft’s narration was on the money.  I always look for narrators that add something to the book they are working with instead of just reading it.  Patrick Cronin IS Prof Croft in these books.  So, with that said, I will be sure to be on the lookout for news announcing the release of the audio.

Here’s the book description for Blue Curse:

ELITE SOLDIER TURNED DRAGON HUNTER

Cursed by a blind witch in a remote corner of Waristan, Special Ops Captain Jason Wolfe finds himself transforming into a creature of local legend, a lupine referred to in fearful whispers as Blue Wolf.

Faster, stronger, and more lethal, he’s the perfect soldier – but not for the U.S. military. To break the curse, Jason must join a war between ancient tribal foes: blue werewolves and the formidable White Dragon.

In a battle spanning from the peaks of Central Asia to the valleys of Manhattan, and with the help of a bookish wizard named Prof Croft, Jason will push himself to the breaking point. Because with the curse now spreading to his mind, he’s running out of time – and the stakes couldn’t be higher:

Win and he returns home to his fiancé, his family, and a future.

Lose and he dies a bloodthirsty beast…

Apprentice in Death by J.D. Robb

Eerily similar to the Las Vegas tragedy.  In the mind of a killer.  In the mind of a cop.  The cop that takes down the killer, with prejudice.

Title: Apprentice in Death
Author: J.D. Robb
Series: In Death #43
Publish Date: September 6,2016
Genre: Mystery/Romance/Futuristic
Narrator: Susan Erickson
Source: Purchased

Publisher’s DescriptionNature versus nurture…

The shots came quickly, silently, and with deadly accuracy. Within seconds, three people were dead at Central Park’s ice skating rink. The victims: a talented young skater, a doctor, and a teacher. As random as random can be.

Eve Dallas has seen a lot of killers during her time with the NYPSD, but never one like this. After reviewing security videos, it becomes clear that the victims were killed by a sniper firing a tactical laser rifle, who could have been miles away when the trigger was pulled. And though the locations where the shooter could have set up seem endless, the list of people with that particular skill set is finite: police, military, professional killer.

Eve’s husband, Roarke, has unlimited resources—and genius—at his disposal. And when his computer program leads Eve to the location of the sniper, she learns a shocking fact: There were two—one older, one younger. Someone is being trained by an expert in the science of killing, and they have an agenda. Central Park was just a warm-up. And as another sniper attack shakes the city to its core, Eve realizes that though we’re all shaped by the people around us, there are those who are just born evil…

Nervous Nellie’s nervousness necessitates knowledge of the novel. In other words…spoilers.  *BEWARE*

Nervous Nellie says…

This book freaked me out.  As I was listening, the Las Vegas shootings became clear as day.  This story has nothing to do with that tragic event and it’s not even like the event itself, but it was eerily similar to what the killer could have been thinking in Las Vegas on that unsuspecting crowd on October 1, 2017.  This gave me chills on more than one occasion.  The callousness of a killer was brought into focus as the killer used the mentor to further their agenda as a killing machine.  The killer never even gave a thought to the pain and misery the victim’s families would go through after the death of their loved one.  I don’t think that ever crosses their minds.  They just like to be all powerful and hold someone’s life in their hands.  That kind of person exists in real life as well in pages of books, and I hope I never ever meet that kind of person.

I love the In Death series books because the format never changes.  The lives of the characters change, but the format of the investigation stays the course.  I think that sometimes authors need to “freshen up” their books or maybe “advance” their characters.  Sure, that’s fine, but I really enjoy the In Death books because I can always guarantee a win at the end.  I can always guarantee living vicariously through the pages and for a few hours be a kick ass, no nonsense Eve Dallas.  The books have all the elements that puts this series firmly in the romance genre, but it is not only romance.  It is mystery, too.  It’s a study of people.  The romance between Eve and Roarke is something to revel in because of his thoughtfulness and angelic features – fallen angelic features.  He’s rich, smart, sexy, and understanding.  He cherishes Eve and what reader doesn’t like to have that feeling while reading?

I know that I’m not talking about Apprentice in Death like I normally review other books.  That’s because if you are a fan, you already know what will happen inasmuch there will be romance that knocks our socks off and a nice juicy murder investigation too.  The scary part of the whole book is the possible insight the reader might receive from reading about a killer that strikes close to home.

Five stars, like always.

Nell’s Gossip and Book Hunt 11/19/2017

Welcome to my Sunday book hunt and author gossip.  Keep coming back for updates on book releases and news from favorite authors.

  • I received the newsletter from Faith Hunter.  Who is Faith Hunter?  Only one of the best authors ever!  She writes the Jane Yellowrock series and also the Nell Ingram series more well known as the Soulwood series.  Now, back to the newsletter.  Faith sent an excerpt from her book that will release on December 5, 2017.  The teaser was an incredible teaser and left me with a “Whaaa?”  I know that within the two books in the Soulwood series, I am hooked.  Faith creates a new character in Jane’s world.  A kind of “spin off” if you will. Dumb ol’ Ricky Bo makes regular appearances in Nell’s world and Faith even makes me feel sorry for him.  I love the overlap of the characters.  It feels like a reconnect with old friends.  A reader doesn’t have to read the Jane Yellowrock series to read the Soulwood series, which may eliminate some overwhelmed feelings since Jane’s series is up to book 12.  With that being said, read below for the info on Soulwood #3, Flame in the Dark as well as Jane Yellowrock #12, Dark Queen.

Title:  Flame in the Dark
Author:  Faith Hunter
Release:  December 5, 2017
Series: Soulwood #3
Book Description: Nell Ingram has always known she was different. Since she was a child, she’s been able to feel and channel ancient powers from deep within the earth. When she met Jane Yellowrock, her entire life changed, and she was recruited into PsyLED—the Homeland Security division that polices paranormals. But now her newly formed unit is about to take on its toughest case yet.

A powerful senator barely survives an assassination attempt that leaves many others dead—and the house he was visiting burns to the ground. Invisible to security cameras, the assassin literally disappears, and Nell’s team is called in. As they track a killer they know is more—or less—than human, they unravel a web of dark intrigue and malevolent motives that tests them to their limits and beyond.

  • Jane has to save Leo’s carcass again.  We all know the European Vamps are coming to visit.  Don’t know when but sometime.  Their agenda is most likely to take over Leo’s territory and wreck havoc. Now, getting rid of Leo wouldn’t be half bad except he’s a danger that Jane knows vs the vamps from Europe who have an unknown agenda. Jane is a very well trained assassin that has assumed the role of Leo Pellisier’s Enforcer.  The pay is good.  The toys are helpful and Yellowrock Securities has made a name for themselves.  Jane started this adventure, for the most part, alone.  She has picked up a family along the way.  She has Bruiser, the Truehearts, her partners Eli and Alex, Edward and Brute.  They are known essentially as the Yellowrock Clan.

Title:  Dark Queen
Author: Faith Hunter
Release:  May 1, 2018
Series:  Jane Yellowrock
Book Description:  Jane Yellowrock is a shapeshifting skinwalker, and as the chief enforcer for the Master of the city of New Orleans, she’s the woman that rogue vampires fear most. But now a blood challenge has been issued to Leo by the ancient emperor of vampires, and Jane must stand and fight.

  • Another new series that is being released by a favorite author is Blue Wolf.  It was released on November 12, 2017 and is worthy of checking into.

  • I love series books.  Whether it be Jane Yellowrock, Nell Ingram, Prof Croft, or In Death – it doesn’t matter.  I love them.  One author that I am ever so excited to say I will get to meet in person next October is Kris Michaels.  She has just released Jade.  The last book was Jewell.  This family is all together in the business of security.  Jacob, Joseph, Adam, Jason, Jared, Jasmine, Chief, Jewell and now Jade. They are very serious about their business and about the loves of their lives.  The Kings of Guardian series is one of those series that I count down the days until release of the next book.  If you happen to read this Ms. Michaels – know you have a fan in Nell Justice.

Title:  Jade
Author:  Kris Michaels
Series:  The Kings of Guardian #9
Release: December 5, 2017
Publisher’s Description:  Jade King lives life at full speed. After over a year undercover for the DEA, she’s back in play and wants what any hot-blooded woman who’s gone a year without sex would want: an alpha bad boy who is convenient, delicious and disposable. A fun one-night stand, multiple orgasms, and absolutely no strings attached. Right? If only.

Nicolas DeMarco has a library stocked with little black books, and his bedpost is nothing but notches. His love ‘em and leave ‘em mentality served him well…until it didn’t. Now, forty years old and in charge of Guardian’s Domestic Security, he’s done with the biological catch and release game that used to thrill him…until Jade King let herself into his office and made him an offer. One he couldn’t refuse…but man, could he screw it up.

When one of the Guardian’s family members is targeted for death, Jade is pulled from her much deserved vacation and into Nicolas DeMarco’s world—a world complete with strings, attachments, feelings, and danger. When the elusive head of the Triad maliciously plans and executes an event that devastates an entire city, it catapults Jade and Nic into a Guardian sanctioned operation. An operation that they may not survive.

While trying to domesticate the feral being that used to be her husband, she also has to deal with her everyday life of annoying all manner of beings—some corporeal, some not so much—as she struggles to right the wrongs of society. Only this time she’s not uncovering a murder. This time she’s covering one up.

Add to that her new occupation of keeping a startup PI venture—the indomitable mystery-solving team of Amber Kowalski and Quentin Rutherford—out of trouble and dealing with the Vatican’s inquiries into her beloved daughter, and Charley is on the brink of throwing in the towel and becoming a professional shopper. Or possibly a live mannequin. But when someone starts attacking humans who are sensitive to the supernatural world, Charley knows it’s time to let loose her razor sharp claws. Then again, her number one suspect is the dark entity she’s loved for centuries. So the question becomes, can she tame the unruly beast before it destroys everything she’s worked so hard to protect?

  • I have another author scheduled for tryout- J.A. Cipriano.  Well, actually, I’ve read book 1 in the series Half Demon Warlock and the series Thrice Cursed Mage is on my list to read.  This new series that was released looks really good.  I’ve got it on my TBR list now, too.

Title: The Hunted
Author: Jessica Gunn
Series: Hunter Circles #1
Release date: June 19, 2017
Publisher’s Description: I’m Krystin Blackwood, and I’ve only ever been good at one thing: killing demons of Darkness.

But at twenty-four, I’m about to face my toughest challenge yet: shifting from working alone to joining a team of three other Hunters. Newbie Hunters. They don’t know their magik, they barely know their place in the world, and when they find out the secrets I’ve been carrying, they’ll definitely decide it’s safer if they don’t know me.

But unfortunately for them—and me—Darkness has other plans. Lady Azar, Darkness’s heir, stole my new team leader’s son two years ago. Now, she and her lackeys are rallying to exchange Ben’s son for me because of the power I wield. I’m one-half of a prophecy to save an ancient city the Powers of Good lost centuries ago. And if I fail or die before that happens, the destruction of that city will be felt across all planes of existence.

If we can’t find Ben’s son before All Hallows’ Eve and somehow save him without putting my life at risk, that existential explosion will absolutely happen. But it’ll be nothing compared to the destruction wrought if Lady Azar changes Ben’s son into a demon… and her minion.

Because the only thing more dangerous than me with a blade is a father’s wrath.
