Welcome to my Sunday book hunt and author gossip.  Keep coming back for updates on book releases and news from favorite authors.

Back with new releases again… they keep writin’ them, we keep readin’ them.

I know you’ve already heard about this because word like this spreads like wildfire.  I’d just like to include it because I’m so excited.  Jim Butcher is releasing Peace Talks in 2020.  July to be exact.  I expect a lot of people will be sick from work that day.

Title:  Peace Talks
Author:  Jim Butcher
Series: The Dresden Files #16
Release date:  July 14, 2020
Description: Harry Dresden is back and ready for action, in the new entry in the #1 New York Times bestsellingHarry Dresden is back and ready for action, in the new entry in the #1 New York Times bestselling Dresden Files series. Another new release on the horizon for one of my favorite authors.  Kris Michaels has been story spinning again and the Guardian Security Shadow World Series will add another to their family at the end of January.

Title:  Thanatos
Author:  Kris Michaels
Series: Guardian Shadow World #4
Release date: January 28, 2020
Description: It wasn’t until people started shooting at her that Eve Salutem had an inkling she was anything other than an elementary school teacher suffering from a rare form of cancer. Discovering she was a walking source of the vaccine for lethal bioweapons and that her previous twenty-seven years were based on lies, lies, and more lies, shattered her fragile world and threatened her sanity. She wanted to lock the doors, close the shades and hide in the closet, but he wouldn’t let her. According to him––a guy she’d first encountered next to the fresh fish case in the grocery store for Pete’s sake––he was there to save her from some unknown bad guys and her own government.

He didn’t do personal protection––he assassinated people. He didn’t work domestic ops––he was strictly foreign. This babysitting gig in Rochester, Minnesota surveilling a woman who may or may not be an innocent victim was absolutely not in his job description. Dragging her ass across half of America on a forced road trip infuriated him even further. He didn’t need or want to spend days locked in a car with a sexy young woman whose bucket list included drinking champagne, getting a puppy and being kissed. How had this become his life? Her purity and goodness bordered on irresistible, but if he touched her, he’d leave a black smudge on her soul.

In Eve, he saw the goodness of humanity, and Thanatos would storm the gates of Hell to protect her; but a creature of purity and light could never belong to the assassin who was named after a God of Death.

Asp (Guardian Security Shadow World #2) by Kris Michaels

Guardian Security’s Shadow World reveals Asp. The Shadow World operatives have nothing. No real relationships, no ties. All they have is their job, and their closest friends are other assassins.  How does one drop their guard long enough to let someone else in?

Title: Asp
Author:  Kris Michaels
Series:  Guardian Security Shadow World #2
Publish Date: July 31, 2018
Genre:  Military Romance
Source: reviewers purchase

Publisher’s Description:
As a Shadow, Asp planned his assassinations with meticulous care. His work required one thing, that the Council direct his kills. The coded target became a “sanctioned hit” and that distinction was vital.

His most recent assignment took him to a remote area of the Andes Mountains in Colombia. He completed his assassination according to plan – more or less – but no amount of careful planning could have prepared him for the dire circumstances he found himself in. As he faded in and out of consciousness due to a life-threatening bullet wound, he knew he might not get home. He’d resigned himself to dying alone, just not this soon.

Lyric Gadson was an unwilling expatriate. She’d trade her grandfather’s farm in the foothills of the Andes for her old life in Jacksonville, Florida in a heartbeat. But, the cost of a return ticket was out of reach, and Lyric found herself maturing from carefree teen to responsible woman on a remote Colombia banana farm. When her beloved grandfather failed to return from his yearly pilgrimage to his wife’s shrine, Lyric thought nothing of packing her kit and hiking into the Andes mountains to find him. She found her grandfather—and an unconscious man near death. Her decision to stay and care for the dying man would usher in the greatest love of her life, but it could also threaten everyone else she held dear.

Nervous Nellie’s nervousness necessitates knowledge of the novel. In other words… SPOILERS. *BEWARE*

Nervous Nellie says…

This is a new series, a spin-off of The Kings of Guardian series. These men (so far) are assassins who take care of the sanctioned kills of super bad people. This story does have some swearing, some sex but no cliffhanger. There are also guns, scary situations and an impossible kind of love that becomes possible.

Kris Michaels’s writing ranks right up there with a lot of great writers–Susan Stoker, Teresa Gabelman, and Tina Folsom are just a few. This story is well thought out and is written so well that it’s very hard to put down. As a matter of fact, the pages practically turn themselves.

Since I’ve never been an assassin or in a situation where I had to hole up in a cave and heal after a gunshot wound, I can’t say if this story is believable or would actually happen like it does in the book. With that said, I believe it. I can’t imagine the hours of research that this author has put into her books, but like I said, they are so well written and action-packed that I felt like I was a mouse hidden in the backpack coming along for the ride.

There is no doubt that this is a 5 star. Every time I finish one of Michaels’s books, I think it can’t get any better, but by the time the next book rolls around and I read it, it gets better.  Cheers to an amazing author.

It turns out that Avalon has only grown since their last encounter, adding fresh villains to its horde. As Layla fights against the forces of evil, her powers begin to increase—and she discovers more about the darkness that lies in her past. As this same darkness threatens her future, will she be ready to fight for everything she holds dear?

Alex Verus is tracking down dangerous magical items unleashed into the world by Dark Mages – however, when the Light Council decide they need his help in negotiating with the perpetrators, Alex must use all his cunning and magic to strike a deal.

A brand new novella in the New York Times bestselling series featuring vampires in the Windy City.

Merit, Sentinel of Chicago’s Cadogan House, is pregnant. She’s ready to meet her daughter, but also very excited about the possibility of seeing her feet again. But trouble always seems to find her…

Ethan and Merit have been married for eight months, and they’re preparing for life-with-baby. Ethan’s battling his overprotectiveness, while Merit’s hoping she can figure out how to be a loving parent given her family’s chilliness.

While out on an evening walk, Merit stops to help a human in need, only to find herself under attack. A sociopath with a debt figures pregnant Merit is an easy target–and Cadogan House would pay handsomely for her return…

Most think that newest VC Warrior, Ronan McDonald, is just a laid-back cowboy. What they don’t see is the inner turmoil that only his small ranch and horses can tame. At least that was the way it had been until a witch with a beauty none could deny walked into his life.

Running has been Kira Grail’s life for as long as she can remember. It isn’t until she meets a VC Warrior that she realizes she is growing weary, but the forces chasing her will never bend.

Ronan doesn’t believe in witches or curses. What he does believe is that only he can keep Kira safe. Together they fight to bring the once powerful warlock, Orjyll, to his knees releasing the women of the Dragonfly Coven. During their perilous journey Kira vows to keep her distance, but the vampire cowboy has other plans.

Anubis by Kris Michaels

A new suspense romance series written by a fabulous artist.  If you like an action packed ride, this is one for the books.

Title: Anubis
Author: Kris Michaels
Series: Guardians of the Shadow World
Publish Date: January 30, 2018
Genre: Romance Suspense
Cover: Digitally Imagined
Source: purchased by reviewer
Publisher’s Description:  In the Shadow World, he was the God of Death, and he was called many names. The monsters he hunted called him Anubis. Those who saw his face died. To Guardian Security, he was a number, a surgical weapon they wielded against monstrous evil. One woman called him Kaeden Lang. Anubis never meant her to be anything except an interlude, a moment of light in the darkness of his life, a one-time escape from the ever-present haze of death. He committed an unforgivable sin—he saw her again—and again—and again. She held back the shadows that threatened to consume him.

Sky Meyers made a grave mistake six years ago. She fell in love—only to have the man she knew as Kaeden Lang disappear. Now, his daughter needed him to save her life. As the office manager for the State District Attorney, Sky accessed national databases in a desperate search for her baby’s daddy only to discover the man she knew as Kaeden Lang didn’t exist. She’d already lost the man she loved; she couldn’t lose her daughter.

Other eyes noticed Sky’s search. Abruptly recalled and informed of the existence of his daughter and her illness, Anubis slipped through the shadows to help Sky—but found death threatened more than his daughter. In her attempt to find Kaeden Lang, Sky unknowingly jeopardized his Shadow World existence by alerting an enemy Kaeden Lang can’t eliminate–only Anubis can.

Nervous Nellie’s nervousness necessitates knowledge of the novel. In some cases…spoilers. *BEWARE*

Nervous Nellie says..

This is a romance – my favorite kind – one with a happy ending.  There is sex involved and some swearing. There are assassins involved, but they play for the good guy side.  There isn’t any graphic death – not like a horror story might have, but there is a couple of dead people involved.

I really love the Kings of Guardian series.  If I had to choose, my favorite to date is Jewell and here is that review.  However, we are on Anubis right now.  This is another series that author Kris Michaels is writing.  It’s called Guardians of the Shadow World.

This series has recurring characters which is the part of the series I like.  Even after their story is done, the characters pop up in other stories.  It’s like being part of a family.  I get to see them joke and tease as well as watch their progression with the family and their position within the Guardian world.

I know the concept of having assassins on the payroll might be tough to think about in real life and it might be hard to reconcile taking the life of someone else because of their penchant to kill and destroy lives.  I get that.  However, I am sure there really are people that have this job to make our lives less frightening.  With that being said, I do not have a problem with the Shadow World of Guardian.  In a perfect world, karma or whatever you want to call it -would punish those that do atrocities to other innocents just because they can.  We all know there is no such thing as a perfect world.

Anubis is Guardian Security’s asset and he kills with poison.  He is not an up close and personal killer. I could do research and see what that means psychologically, but that would be going too far and besides, I don’t really want to know.  This is a suspenseful story and I loved it just the way it is.

Everyone deserves happiness and this was an incredible story of a ray of sunshine perminating a life lived in the shadows.  It was a story about a path that was set in stone suddenly having a fork in the road that may lead to a better life.

The heroine was not whiny.  She was a strong lady and she didn’t make stupid choices.  She did what needed to be done and did not hesitate to face problems head on.  I think Sky was the toughest woman have met in a story.

The hero, suffice it to say, was struggling with himself.  The things he’d done and the danger he would bring to the doorstep of the people he loved.  It was a battle that ranged from the “right thing to do” and the “right thing I want to do”.  He was rather between a rock and a hard place.  I loved the way it all turned out.  5 stars.
