Home for the Holidays by Jeaniene Frost

Cat and Bones were looking forward to a normal holiday – at least as “normal” as it gets for vampires and their otherworldly friends and family.

Publisher’s Description:  Cat and Bones were looking forward to a normal holiday – at least as “normal” as it gets for vampires and their otherworldly friends and family. But their yuletide plans are shattered when a mysterious stranger shows up and reveals long-buried secrets that threaten to take a bite out of their holiday cheer – and lives.

Nervous Nellie’s nervousness necessitates knowledge of the novel. In other words …SPOILERS. *BEWARE*

Nervous Nellie says…

Yep.  I read a holiday book before Thanksgiving was even here.  Why? Well, I was feelin’ the holiday.  I mean, seriously, how is a person supposed to wait when Hallmark Channel is promoting Christmas movies?  Anyway, this book was a re-read and like all Jeaniene Frost books, it was awesome.

This book was #6.5 in the Night Huntress series.  I’ve re-read #1-3 and it seemed like a good idea to see if I remember the Christmas edition.  I can safely say that I did not remember all aspects of the story.

Long story short- Cat and Bones invite friends to their house for Christmas.  This story has an element in it that makes me sad for Bones, but also shed more light on the characters as a whole.  I don’t think you’d really “miss” a lot if you didn’t read it, but the story had some jaw droppers in it that I really appreciated.  I guess what I’m trying to say is that it really added more depth to the characters. More background. More identity.

I did have one problem with the story. I know that Menchares is incredibly strong in mind and body, but I would have thought his life experience would have made him clue in on what was happening.  However, then Cat wouldn’t have been able to save the day.  I guess I can’t have it both ways, right?

As always, there is a ton of blood, gore, explosions and sex.  I give it a 5.

Nell’s Gossip and Book Hunt 11/10/19

Welcome to my Sunday book hunt and author gossip.  Keep coming back for updates on book releases and news from favorite authors.

Back with new releases again… they keep writin’ them, we keep readin’ them.

I am so glad there are authors because I just LOVE books.  Ebooks, audiobooks, paperbacks – love ‘em.  Last week I told you about the Other Side of the Grave by Jeaniene Frost.  It’s on her website and it’s free.  It’s the first 4 chapters (so far) of the first book she wrote, Halfway to the Grave except it’s from Bones’ point of view.  It’s incredibly fun to read what the stoic, no nonsense, centuries old master vampire Bones thinks as he falls in love.  Hee hee.  Bones with hearts circling his head.  *snicker* How hard they fall.  HA!

Full disclosure here. I gotta tell you one drawback.  You and I know about our stash of books on our TBR pile. You know that pile – the pile we sometimes hide from loved ones in case they think we need an intervention. Yeah, that pile.  I’m not reducing it when I come across these kinds of tempting novellas  You ask why on earth would that be a problem? Well, from reading these three chapters, I couldn’t help myself and went back to my old books from the series and started re-reading them.  I’m now halfway through the second book in the series.  I forgot how good that series really is.  With that being said, any newbies that are looking for a good romance and action packed series, the Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost would be a excellent recommendation.

From the escapades of Bones and Cat, we meet a LOT of vampires.  We meet Ian, Mencheres (who are Bones’ sire and grand sire respectively) and Spade to start.  The Night Huntress series spawns The Night Huntress World where Mencheres and Spade find their special someones.  The Night Rebel series focuses on Ian.  The first book in the Night Rebel series is called Shades of Wicked.  It was released October 30, 2018.  Now, book #2 will be released early next year and that book will be called…

Title: Wicked Bite
Author: Jeaniene Frost
Series:  Night Rebel #2
Release date:  January 28, 2020
Description: Some promises are meant to be broken…

Veritas spent most of her life as a vampire Law Guardian. Now, she’s about to break every rule by secretly hunting down the dark souls that were freed in order to save Ian. But the risks are high. For if she gets caught, she could lose her job. And catching the sinister creatures might cost Veritas her own life.

Some vows are forever…

Ian’s memories might be fragmented, but this master vampire isn’t about to be left behind by the woman who entranced him, bound herself to him, and then disappeared. So what if demons, other Law Guardians, and dangerous, otherworldly forces stand against them? Come hell or high water, Ian intends to remind Veritas of the burning passion between them, because she is the only person seared on his mind–and his soul…

While surfing around, I found another similar kind of read.  It’s from 2012, but that doesn’t mean it’s not good.  Check it out.

Title:  Wicked as They Come
Author:  Delilah S. Dawson
Series:  Blud #1
Release Date:  March 27, 2012
Description: When nurse Tish Everett forced open the pesky but lovely locket she found at an estate sale, she had no idea she was answering the call of Criminy Stain, from the far off land of Sang. He’d cast a spell for her, but when she’s transported right to him, she’s not so sure she’s ready to be under the spell of another man. (It didn’t go so well last time with controlling, abusive, domineering Jeff.) If only Criminy wasn’t so deliciously rakish….

Half the inhabitants of Sang are Pinkies—human—and the other half are Bludmen, who in Tish’s world would be called vampires. But they don’t mess with any of the bat/coffin/no sunlight nonsense. They’re rather like you and me, just more fabulous, long living, and mostly indestructible. (They’re also very good kissers.) But when the evil Mayor of Manchester (formerly Bludchester) redoubles his efforts to rid Sang of the Bludmen once and for all, stealing Tish’s locket in hopes of traveling back to her world himself for reinforcements, Criminy and Tish must battle ghosts, sea monsters, wayward submarines, a secret cabal, and thundering Bludmares to get the locket back and allow Tish to return home…but has she found love with Criminy? Could she stay in Sang forever?

Once Burned by Jeaniene Frost

Vlad Tepesh blindsided.   How can that even happen?  Well, it happened.  Check out Once Burned, the first in the Night Prince series.

Title: Once Burned
Author:  Jeaniene Frost
Series:  Night Prince #1
Publish Date:  June 26, 2012
Genre:  Vampire Romance
Source:  purchased by reviewer

Publisher’s Description:  She’s a mortal with dark powers…

After a tragic accident scarred her body and destroyed her dreams, Leila never imagined that the worst was still to come: terrifying powers that let her channel electricity and learn a person’s darkest secrets through a single touch. Leila is doomed to a life of solitude…until creatures of the night kidnap her, forcing her to reach out with a telepathic distress call to the world’s most infamous vampire…

He’s the Prince of Night…

Vlad Tepesh inspired the greatest vampire legend of all—but whatever you do, don’t call him Dracula. Vlad’s ability to control fire makes him one of the most feared vampires in existence, but his enemies have found a new weapon against him—a beautiful mortal with powers to match his own. When Vlad and Leila meet, however, passion ignites between them, threatening to consume them both. It will take everything that they are to stop an enemy intent on bringing them down in flames.

Nervous Nellie’s nervousness necessitates knowledge of the novel. In other words …SPOILERS. *BEWARE*

Nervous Nellie says…

His lips twisted. “No. I can give you honesty, monogamy, and more passion that you can stand, but not love. That emotion died in me long ago, as I suspect you already know.”

I read this book several years ago when I was hooked on Cat and Bones. I remember reading their first book around the 2008 time frame. When Frost released Vlad’s book I was all over it though I wasn’t confident I would like him much. He’s a warrior. He impaled thousands of prisoners which is barbaric. On the other hand, he has lived through war after war after war. Death is just another day at the office. Also, he’s born a prince and has been in charge for hundreds of years. After so much of bowing and scraping, I’m sure a person comes to expect it. The arrogance that is the key makeup of his personality is hard won after so many wins against death. I can’t fathom a 600 year old vampire with a record like that going after a 23 year old woman (yes, I know she’s 25 in this instance- it’s the principle of the thing) other than the novelty of being with the young and sexy. I can’t imagine they’d have much to talk about since she is so naïve so therein enters the sex. And she’s a virgin. That’s about as naïve as you can get. I know she isn’t portrayed as naïve because of all the death she’s seen through her gift, but I’m telling you, watching a thing and experiencing a thing is not the same. Now, I’m not bashing on Leila. She’s a character and a young one at that. She’s also silly in love and sometimes that can color a view of the person she’s in love with. She does the best she can with what she has available. I also have to remember, this is the very first adult relationship she’s ever had. Ever. She has nothing to compare it to other than what she’s seen. Not experienced, just seen. Vlad isn’t in love, or so he says. However, he is a man and a tough character at that, so of course he wouldn’t show emotion.

The story is good. I know it’s a bit predictable, but I do like the characters. The story is told in the first person (Leila’s perspective) unless she is reading the essence of an item and then it’s the perspective of the person whose essence is attached to the item. There is quite a little blood (you know…vampires?) and gore (you know…The Impaler?) but not a lot of swearing. A lot of graphic sex scenes, but if it bothers, just skip over that part. There is a lot of scheming and long game playing which vampires are really good at playing. The ending is not a HEA. Remember, there are three more books in the hopper so there has to be drama.
I enjoyed the book and I was grateful that I had the next book to hop into because of the cliffhanger-ish ending. I like Frost’s writing and I will always read her books.

Other recommendations…

  • Here’s a book that caught my eye.  These authors, D.D. Miers and Graceley Knox, are unfamiliar to me but this books description is what put this book in the firm TBR pile.  Yeah, got it in my library and everything so every time I open my kindle it’s there…taunting me.  I AM looking forward to reading this one because, again, read the description!  Oh, and while I was out sifting through the books these authors have in their repertoire, I got hooked on more of their books.  Check out these series too:  Wicked Kingdoms (Knox),  Half-Blood Huntress Chronicles (Miers & Knox), How to Be a Necromancern (Miers & Knox) and Relic Keeper (Miers)

Bastian’s latest assignment offers an escape for my sisters, and I’d be a fool not to take it. But my target is more powerful than any man I’ve faced before, and doubly seductive.
