This is an urban fantasy.  Cliffhanger, but not a long wait until next book.  Violence meets mystery/cop procedural.

I enjoy Raven.  I enjoy her world and the characters in her world.  At the end of the prior book, I wasn’t sure how things would go, but it’s twisting and turning it’s way around.

Okay…..here’s the thing…. I’m losing interest in this series.  Why?  I don’t know.  The nearest I can figure is that the scenes are changing and changing quickly.  Raven isn’t in the same job as when IMG_0945she started.  That should be good, right?  She doesn’t have the same partner, though Rupert is in the book.  She doesn’t have the same lover, so there isn’t any of that sexual tension contributed to betrayal with Francis DuGuerre. My previous opinion of Lord DuGerre still stands.  I want him in the book because I love to hate him. Raven appears to be settled and her lover, Aspen, is developing more into a kick ass like Raven instead of the witch I loved in the previous stories.

Yes, I will see what the next book has in store because I’m hoping that Rupert will be back to being an integral part of Raven’s life again and that Raven comes home to Lady Valentina and her job of Furstin.

This is a pretty good series, so give it a shot.

Another kick ass Raven Storm book.  This one I liked much better than #3.  There was something missing in #3 for me.  I don’t know what it was, but whatever it was, it was found and I enjoyed it.

Raven is determined to solve a 30 year old mystery that was a primary case for her father, Mason.  This book was told from Raven’s point of view and also Mason’s.  I got to know Mason as a man instead of a ghost.  I really enjoyed that part.  Raven does not fall far from the tree.  Oh, she is definitely her father’s daughter.  Valentina and the dirty double crossing snake, Francis DuGuerre made small appearances.  This story was mostly about the killer that was ritualistically taking the lives of young women.  I learned a lot more about Raven’s young life and I appreciate the glimpse.  I met Rupert’s new girlfriend and Were-Eagle, Sloan.  She is awesome.  They make a great pair.  I hope she doesn’t get grossed out by the leftover condiments on Rupe’s suit and tie.  I was kind of bummed about <shriek – major spoiler ahead – shriek> Raven getting suspended and then being offered a job with the FBI.  What about Rupert?  If she moves, all the characters would change and I like the characters!

badge4v4I also had a “things that make me go hmmmmmm….. moment” was <shriek – spoiler ahead – shriek> Raven getting together with Aspen.  I really like Aspen.  She’s a great character, but to be totally honest, she doesn’t match with Raven.  I can understand Aspen falling in love with Raven – kind of a hero worship thing – but an equal relationship is hard to see.  It also feels weird because Aspen is Raven’s familiar.  Now, the relationship was not touched upon for very long because of the end of the story, but being Raven’s familiar, would that induce stronger feelings towards Raven?  I don’t know anything about it because….well…I’m not a familiar….but I’m hoping that the next book explores more of the relationship between Raven and Aspen.

One last thing.  Is it wrong to want Lord DuGuerre in the story?  I just love to hate him.  The jerk. 😉

I am steering away from my normal format of review for this one.  Reason?  I was disappointed.  It felt like the author had something better to do than to spend SO much time on Raven.  I would not doubt that this is the last book in the series, which makes me sad because I want to know if Francis DuGuerre (the jerk face, arrogant traitor) really turns out to be the good guy or if Rupert is the “ONE”.  I need a “Happily Ever After” before the series is finished, darn it!

I can’t believe that Frances DuGuerre had the nerve to whisper to Raven that he still loved her.  After he sold her out to her worst enemy does he think he even gets to stand in the same airspace as Raven?!?  Jerk.

Rupert and Raven decide to keep things professional because of the job.  I’m pretty sure she’s got feelings for Rupert and I think he’d be good for her because he wouldn’t sell her out.  He’s her partner and that means something.

Stupid cult following cells of vampires want to destroy Lady Valentina and her court in order to bring back the meglomaniacal, bat sh*t crazy Stohm.  Strohm is supposed to be true dead at the end of Raven’s stake, but is he really?  Strohm also claims to be the rightful ruler and claimant of the throne.  On top of that swirls the possibility that Strohm is Raven’s father and Mason Storm and Valentina colluded to put Strohm in stasis (illegal in vampire court) in order for Valentina to claim the throne.

Let it be said that I think Raven has been in the cold long enough. Her family are jerks.  Her former lover is worse than a jerk and Rupert….well *shrug* what IS he thinking? There was no progress in any relationships and the plot wasn’t all that.  She was betrayed and abandoned. I say enough already.  Cut Raven some slack–and for God’s sake, give her someone she can count on!

Nell 200 qNervous Nellie says…

Main characters: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ Ravenel Storm and Rupert Levac, now nicknamed “Le Storm” are back to work another case together. Lady Valentina and her court still need to be taken care of and and Francois (the shyster) has the nerve to show his double crossing scoundrelistic, (is that a word?) deceitful and underhanded yet gorgeous face in Raven’s mother’s court.

Other characters: ♥ ♥ ♥ Dirty rotten Strohm followers and Raven’s darn family are nearly more than she can take.

World: ♥ ♥ ♥ The story again takes place in contemporary Chicago, IL.

Story: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ Betrayal is the name of the game this time around. Raven is left heartbroken and doubting herself. If the betrayal wasn’t enough, now Raven has to fight her past. Raven has a history with the form of the evil drug Thirst. It cost her a job on the vice squad, her partner and she needs to solve the curious murders that look like the end stages of Thirst Addiction. Raven has to fight through her feelings for Francois and his betrayal all the while Francois wants to have her back. Vampires…..what do you do with them?

Overall: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ I really loved the romance and then the betrayal. I can say that because I had Book Two ready and waiting when Book One was done. Less of a heart wrenching wait so I wasn’t so freaked out. I can’t believe jerkface (I could come up with a more colorful description if you really wanted me to) Francois did what he did and still thinks he has the right to love Raven. Raven really got taken for a ride and she seemed to not have much family support. If it weren’t for Rupert, it would feel like Raven was all alone. The story was awesome. If I could say, I liked this book more than the first, but it’s really split right down the center. I can’t choose.

Nervous Nellie says…

Nell 200 qMain characters: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ Ravenel Storm is a homicide detective that has a tough time keeping partners. She throws herself into dangerous spot after dangerous spot because she is Fürsten which is another term for bodyguard, enforcer, heir to the throne, and second in command to her mother, Lady Valentina, the vampire queen. To make things interesting, she is also a dhamphyr. Her deceased human father was a cop, so naturally she felt she needed to follow in his footsteps. Her new partner is Rupert Levac who has taken on the persona of Columbo but has a terrible nickname on the Chicago Police Force of “Codumbo.” He is rumpled mess, but I think he’s smart as a tack.

Other characters: ♥ ♥ ♥ Ravenel “Raven” has several full vampire brothers and sisters, but her mother is the Queen of the court. One of the court attendees is Francois Du Guerre. He is dashing, well connected and seems to fall for Raven right away. He is always there to help her and he understands the difficulties of being Fürsten. He is sweet, kind and understanding. They both fall for each other quickly. The other detectives are not very friendly to Raven and her siblings seem to have their own agendas.

World: ♥ ♥ ♥ The story takes place in contemporary Chicago, IL. It’s a regular mystery/thriller type world with paranormal creatures running around. Often these paranormal creatures are the ones doing the killing and Raven is the one that is responsible to make it stop…..permanently.

Story: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ As Fürsten, Raven must police her mother’s court, her mother’s territory and keep everyone and everything in line. It’s a tough line to walk because she is needed to solve crimes as well as protect her mother who is Mistress of the City. It seems like Raven is in up to her neck with trying to keep the humans from finding out about vampires and vampires from eating the humans when she meets Francois and her life turns for the better. The other part of the story has to do with the ritualistic homicides that can’t pass for normal, the relationship she builds with Rupert and more twists and turns than you can imagine.

Overall: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ I liked the whole concept of the story. I liked the characters even though Raven seems indestructible. If she could be a little less super hero-ish, then I guess it wouldn’t be fantasy. The only thing that was a bummer for me was the cliffhanger. I can’t spoil it, but be sure you have book two ready and in the wings because you are going to need it RIGHT AWAY!
