Protecting Caroline by Susan Stoker

Neither Wolf nor Caroline were prepared for a terrorist hijacking of their plane, but if Caroline thought that would be the last time she’d see, or need, Wolf, she’d be sorely mistaken.

Publisher’s Description: **Protecting Caroline is a stand-alone love story. It’s Book 1 in the SEAL of Protection Series.**

Matthew “Wolf” Steel hated flying commercial. Luckily his job as a Navy SEAL meant he didn’t have to do it very often. He’d been unlucky enough to be assigned a middle seat on the cramped jet, but fortunately for him, the woman next to him was willing to switch seats with him. Hoping for a relaxing flight, Wolf was pleasantly surprised at the good conversation and sense of humor the woman had as they flew 36,000 feet over the countryside.

When Caroline boarded the plane to Virginia to move across the country for her new job she never expected to be seated next to the hottest guy she’d ever seen. She also never expected he’d be so easy to talk to. She knew he’d never be interested in talking to her if he hadn’t been trapped in the seat next to her, but it was a nice way to spend a long plane ride.

Neither Wolf nor Caroline were prepared for a terrorist hijacking of their plane, but if Caroline thought that would be the last time she’d see, or need, Wolf, she’d be sorely mistaken.

Nervous Nellie says…

I read this book in 2017 and then listened to it in 2020.  It’s a powerful book.  There is more thriller to this story than romance.  The heroine of this book is more than just strong.  She has the iron will of a beast.  She did get the raw end of the deal as far as physical punishment and torture, but she shone through as a strong and smart woman would.

The basic premise of this book is that Caroline foiled hijacker’s plans to take a plane and maybe kill everyone on it.  Now they want her to pay.  And there is a bit of romance thrown in.  I LOVED this book.

I think that the audio book had more impact than the written word this time.  The narration was great and when I don’t notice the voice changes, it usually means the narrator knows what she’s doing.  Stella Bloom is the narrator in this book and she does a great job.

If you like a strong Alpha male, take charge kind of story, this is less than that.  It’s a story about TWO strong people.  Caroline is not a wimpy, “oh save me” kind of heroine.  In fact, SHE saves HIS life twice.  I LOVED this book.  4 stars for the written version but 5 stars for the audio.

Titan series by Cristin Harber

Military Romance bundle in the Romance Package on Audible.  Worth it? Or No?

I like military romances and I especially like them when they are bundled so I get 5 books for one price.  This one is called the Titan Series by Cristin Harber.  This set was bundled up and released on 12/10/18.   One tends to think that when the books are bundled that way they may not be that good.  One could be right, but these weren’t bad, but they weren’t super either.  They were good to cook, clean and work on my hobbies while listening, so they rated a 3. They had their cookie cutter format, but each character was one that had their own story to tell.  There was a lot of gratis sex, violence and blood.  There was cussing, alpha men who were bossy and women that were mostly strong.  I’m not sure I could handle a “helicopter husband” who had to know the who, where and when of my life 24/7.

I think that the books would have been better reading than listening because the narrator had his high points and low points.  Multiple times I caught him reading the book instead of narrating it.  The part that bugged me the most was the part where he reached the bottom of the page and hesitated to finish the sentence until he turned the page.    Like I said, they weren’t great but they were not bad either.  Middle of the road.

Nervous Nellie’s nervousness necessitates knowledge of the novel. In other words …SPOILERS. *BEWARE*

Nervous Nellie says…

The President’s daughter has disappeared.  The school teacher is the best bet in finding her.  Two people who haven’t seen each other since a tragic death of his best friend and her dad.  School teacher meet SEAL.

Some military romances have more sex and less story, but this book had a good story too.  A story about busy political parents not always having time for their daughter.  A story about how easy a daughter can be lured away from her family and used.  The story starts out regular paced but as soon as the operation commences, the adventure begins.  It was a page turner, for sure.

Garrett heads up the retrieval team and Mimi is the school teacher that knows the President’s daughter best.  Garrett doesn’t recognize Mimi because she was 13 when he saw her last.  She has had a crush on him for ages.  Now, she gets to make those fantasies come true.

The most embarrassing moment:  Garrett and Mimi get it on while she’s wearing a wire that the rest of the team can hear.  Yikes.

There is sex, there is violence and there is a bad guy with a bunch of mercenaries guarding good people who got sucked in.

The sirens, the smoke, the screams…Dante himself could have written the scene playing out in front of Silas when they arrived on the outskirts of the area that had been hit the hardest.

Wow. This is NOT a sweet (a romance that has no dark tendencies) romance. As the quote above reveals a trip to the “front lines” for our hero, if sweet is what you want, you might not choose this book.  However, I’m not always keen on sweet romances tending to lean more toward the more dark and realistic.

This is a short book, 150 pages. It was a nice afternoon read and it felt like a complete novel.  I didn’t feel slighted or feel like I missed out on key scenes.  Neither hero or heroine made a fool out of themselves.  There are sex scenes, but between husband and wife. There was grief involved in their story, but only enough revealed to be sure it was understood where the character’s feelings were coming from.  Of course there is a HEA, but I wouldn’t be reading it if there wasn’t.

I most likely would not have caught this series if it weren’t for Kris Michaels.  She is one of my favorite authors and is writing for this series.  What ever should I do while waiting for her book in the series to be released? Read the others of course!!  Here is the complete list of the series and release dates.

Nervous Nellie’s nervousness necessitates knowledge of the novel. In other words… SPOILERS. *BEWARE*

Nervous Nellie says…

This is a romance series, hot military guys, standalone story. No cliffhanger. No sex. I have not read these books in order, and it doesn’t mess up the overall arc much.  The parts that gets confusing is when one SEAL pairs up and they are mentioned in another book.  It’s also not all that confusing, really.  I just jumped over that part because who belongs to who is just the series but not necessarily ruins the story line.

I have been waiting for this story through the whole series.  Mary frustrated me over and over again, but she’s a pretty screwed up person.  Her mother really did a job on her as Mary grew up.

Mary and “Truck” are married.  That bombshell was dropped and every character was thrown for a loop.  Mary treated “Truck” so… badly isn’t the word exactly.  More like held him at arms length so “Truck” really never knew Mary’s true feelings.  This was a hard book to listen to.  I cried through most of the first chapters and then later on again.  Mary’s story is so sad and her opinion of herself is very low.  “Truck” doesn’t know what to do.  He waits and waits, but Mary isn’t warming up.  What should he do? Cut his losses and move on?

I have to tell you I loved this book.  Loved, loved, loved it.  It ripped my heart out and I could feel every stabbing emotional pain Mary had.  Mary is so lucky that she has Rayne.  Thick and thin, people.  She’s with Mary through it all…almost.  Mary is going to die (don’t worry, she doesn’t in the end) and she pushes Rayne out and convinces herself that she’s only using “Truck” for his insurance.  She loves him but can’t admit it because her mama trained her from the age of 5 that men suck.  Mary is really screwed up – but how can she not be?  She’s been through hell – all nine circles of it.  And then another circle of hell crops up.  Tragedy takes Mary out of “Truck’s” life through amnesia.  Holy cats.  How much more can they take?

It all turns out fine, don’t worry.  The story winds around up and down and then splits before coming back together to twist around again.  It was a ride that was very hard to put down.  Listened to the whole audio in 2 days.  It was amazing.

The narrator of this story is female, but she does a really good job of diversifying the characters.  I like her so much that I’ve listened to a lot of her audios.
