Nell’s Gossip and Book Hunt 11/10/19

Welcome to my Sunday book hunt and author gossip.  Keep coming back for updates on book releases and news from favorite authors.

Back with new releases again… they keep writin’ them, we keep readin’ them.

I am so glad there are authors because I just LOVE books.  Ebooks, audiobooks, paperbacks – love ‘em.  Last week I told you about the Other Side of the Grave by Jeaniene Frost.  It’s on her website and it’s free.  It’s the first 4 chapters (so far) of the first book she wrote, Halfway to the Grave except it’s from Bones’ point of view.  It’s incredibly fun to read what the stoic, no nonsense, centuries old master vampire Bones thinks as he falls in love.  Hee hee.  Bones with hearts circling his head.  *snicker* How hard they fall.  HA!

Full disclosure here. I gotta tell you one drawback.  You and I know about our stash of books on our TBR pile. You know that pile – the pile we sometimes hide from loved ones in case they think we need an intervention. Yeah, that pile.  I’m not reducing it when I come across these kinds of tempting novellas  You ask why on earth would that be a problem? Well, from reading these three chapters, I couldn’t help myself and went back to my old books from the series and started re-reading them.  I’m now halfway through the second book in the series.  I forgot how good that series really is.  With that being said, any newbies that are looking for a good romance and action packed series, the Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost would be a excellent recommendation.

From the escapades of Bones and Cat, we meet a LOT of vampires.  We meet Ian, Mencheres (who are Bones’ sire and grand sire respectively) and Spade to start.  The Night Huntress series spawns The Night Huntress World where Mencheres and Spade find their special someones.  The Night Rebel series focuses on Ian.  The first book in the Night Rebel series is called Shades of Wicked.  It was released October 30, 2018.  Now, book #2 will be released early next year and that book will be called…

Title: Wicked Bite
Author: Jeaniene Frost
Series:  Night Rebel #2
Release date:  January 28, 2020
Description: Some promises are meant to be broken…

Veritas spent most of her life as a vampire Law Guardian. Now, she’s about to break every rule by secretly hunting down the dark souls that were freed in order to save Ian. But the risks are high. For if she gets caught, she could lose her job. And catching the sinister creatures might cost Veritas her own life.

Some vows are forever…

Ian’s memories might be fragmented, but this master vampire isn’t about to be left behind by the woman who entranced him, bound herself to him, and then disappeared. So what if demons, other Law Guardians, and dangerous, otherworldly forces stand against them? Come hell or high water, Ian intends to remind Veritas of the burning passion between them, because she is the only person seared on his mind–and his soul…

While surfing around, I found another similar kind of read.  It’s from 2012, but that doesn’t mean it’s not good.  Check it out.

Title:  Wicked as They Come
Author:  Delilah S. Dawson
Series:  Blud #1
Release Date:  March 27, 2012
Description: When nurse Tish Everett forced open the pesky but lovely locket she found at an estate sale, she had no idea she was answering the call of Criminy Stain, from the far off land of Sang. He’d cast a spell for her, but when she’s transported right to him, she’s not so sure she’s ready to be under the spell of another man. (It didn’t go so well last time with controlling, abusive, domineering Jeff.) If only Criminy wasn’t so deliciously rakish….

Half the inhabitants of Sang are Pinkies—human—and the other half are Bludmen, who in Tish’s world would be called vampires. But they don’t mess with any of the bat/coffin/no sunlight nonsense. They’re rather like you and me, just more fabulous, long living, and mostly indestructible. (They’re also very good kissers.) But when the evil Mayor of Manchester (formerly Bludchester) redoubles his efforts to rid Sang of the Bludmen once and for all, stealing Tish’s locket in hopes of traveling back to her world himself for reinforcements, Criminy and Tish must battle ghosts, sea monsters, wayward submarines, a secret cabal, and thundering Bludmares to get the locket back and allow Tish to return home…but has she found love with Criminy? Could she stay in Sang forever?

Nell’s Gossip and Book Hunt 4/28/19

Welcome to my Sunday book hunt and author gossip.  Keep coming back for updates on book releases and news from favorite authors.

Back with new releases again… they keep writin’ them, we keep readin’ them.

  • Again, stumbling around on the great www and found this new to me author.  Check out this book – love the cover.   I’ve started this book already, and I’ve got to tell you that I like it.  I mean, granted, I’m only on chapter 2, but so far it’s keeping me turning pages.  I can describe the protagonist for you:  He is one part Harry Dresden, one  part Lucifer (the show, not the Devil), and one part Wynona Earp.  Seriously, one kick  ass paranormal investigator.

Title Devil’s Due
Author: Percival Constantine
Series:  Luther Cross #1
Release date: April 1, 2019
Description: Half-human. Half-demon. All attitude.
Luther Cross here. Dangerously handsome, effortlessly stylish half-demon, at your service. As I have inherited certain…abilities with my odd genetics, I’ve put them to use as Chicago’s foremost paranormal investigator.

My current case? Well, I have to admit, it feels a little personal. I’m helping a mysterious girl who’s turned up on my doorstep, pregnant through mystic means. I can’t help but think of my own mother…and if I don’t help her, she’ll face the same fate.

Turns out, someone is trying to create an army of half-demons. While it might be a pleasant change to hang out with my own kind, I know most half-demons don’t have my sense of morality. If I don’t stop this evil plan, the armistice between Heaven and Hell will be broken and all of the Earth will pay… It will be the beginning of the end.

  • Here’s another pick that has an awesome cover.  It’s book 1 in, hopefully, will be a series.  One of the authors is Orlando Sanchez and he’s written the book I’ve just read Tombyards and Butterflies.  One of the protagonists is a character named Strong.  He is a very frustrating character compared to the other protagonist, Montague.  I’ll have the review done and you can read about it.  For now, thought, check out this book for your TBR pile.

And   Orlando Sanchez
Series: Badlands Paranormal Police Department
Release date:  December 21, 2018
Description: In the Badlands, you keep your enemies close and the monsters closer.

Welcome to the Badlands Paranormal Police Department, where Chief Ezekias ‘Zeke’ Phoenix, a dragon who believes rules are meant to be followed, has accepted his new post.

His job is simple: keep the fragile peace between dragons, hellions, and the denizens of hell. The rules in Infernal City are even simpler: mind your business, watch your back, shoot first, and don’t bother asking questions.

When a dead hellion crashes into his life, Zeke and the Badlands PPD will break all the rules of the City. To find the killer, he’s going to make some powerful enemies who would prefer to see the new dragon chief of the PPD retired…permanently.

If Zeke fails, the Badlands will plunge into a civil war. If he succeeds, he places a target on his back, and his enemies rarely miss.

Will Zeke risk setting off the powder keg of Infernal City? Will he find the killer and bring him to justice before the Badlands becomes a wasteland? Or will they give him an early retirement package…sudden death?

If you like Jim Butcher, Domino Finn, Michael Anderle, M. D. Massey, Rick Gualtieri, Eric Quinn Knowles, Noah K. Sturdevant, Ben Zackheim, K.F. Breene, Shayne Silvers, Ilona Andrews, Brad Magnarella, Patricia Briggs, or Kim Harrison…you’ll have a blast with this book in the Badlands Paranormal Police Department.

The Seer’s Daughter by Athena Daniels

This seductive supernatural thriller is as sexy as it is captivating. The Seer’s Daughter is a perfect blend of suspense, paranormal and romance. A brutal murder brings together a young woman and a detective with two very different beliefs.

I received an ARC or review copy of this book from the author/publisher. All opinions are my own.

seersTitle: The Seer’s Daughter
Author: Athena Daniels
Series: Beyond the Grave 01
Publish Date: November 9, 2015, Sunset Coast Publishing
Genre: Thriller/Paranormal Romance
Source: From the publisher

Publisher’s DescriptionTo save her, he must let go of everything he ever believed.

Upon returning to her hometown for her grandmother’s funeral, Sage Matthews is terrorized by a series of strange events. She dismisses each eerie occurrence as a by-product of her overwrought emotional state, until it becomes chillingly clear that something not of this world is desperate to get a message—or is it a warning?—through to her…

Detective Sergeant Ethan Blade comes to Cryton, South Australia, to catch a serial killer. When Ethan meets Sage—the latest victim’s beautiful granddaughter—his attraction to her is explosive and inconvenient. He knows she’s not crazy, but Sage’s theory about the murders is unbelievable.

With the handsome detective rejecting her ideas, Sage embarks on the supernatural journey that her grandmother started. What she discovers shatters everything Sage ever knew about herself—and who she really is.

Ethan’s routine case quickly turns personal when he discovers Sage is the killer’s next target. For her, he’ll break all the rules and cross every line. But how can he protect Sage from an evil he cannot even conceive of?

Possible spoilers beyond this point.

Luna Lovebooks says…Luna_Lovebooks_100

“Mother of all things holy, the man knew how to kiss! Every inch of her skin was on fire and aching for his touch. She ran her hands across his shoulders and down his chest, resenting the thin layer of fabric that kept her from the warmth of his skin. Tugging at the bottom of his T-shirt, she caressed his taut abdomen, then slid her fingers up and across the rippling muscles of his chest. The contact was electric, and she reveled in the low sound it elicited from him.”

This is the first book I have read by the author and to be honest it probably will not be the last (and not just because of the cliffhanger ending). The romance is steamy but it isn’t overpowering. The main focus is the investigation into Sage’s grandmother’s death. Sage begins to believe her Nan was killed by some supernatural force, while Detective Ethan Blade thinks more logically. The blending of these two beliefs from logical serial killer to demon possession is amazing.

There were two elements that bothered me a little. One was the fact that Sage spent a little too much time grieving over Nan. I understand that it was a sudden and tragic death and they were super close, but I felt like she should have gotten angrier and wanted to catch the killer far sooner than she did. The second element was the inconsistency of the family’s popularity. It is established that no one visits the shop or send cards and that Nan’s circle was small. But suddenly everyone loves Nan and her funeral is attended by a multitude of people? It was just a little hard to believe.

Despite these two shortcomings, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and they don’t take away from the novel, just makes you pause and question. I cannot wait to dive into the rest of the series over the next few months and see where the Beyond the Grave series takes us! I give this particular novel 4 pendants.

Switchback by Melissa F. Olson

The Chicago pod of the Bureau of Preternatural Investigations faces its next big challenge. But will all the members make it out unscathed?

Publisher’s DescriptionThe Bureau of Preternatural Investigations returns in the sequel to Melissa F. Olson’s Nightshades.

The team gets a call from Switch Creek, WI, where a young man has been arrested on suspicion of being a shade. The suspect is held overnight, pending DNA testing, but seemingly escapes in a terrifying and bloody massacre. But is there more to the jailbreak than a simple quest for freedom?

Possible spoilers beyond this point.

Invested Ivana says…

Switchback is the second installment in the Nightshades series. I wasn’t aware the second book had come out and was pleasantly surprised to stumble across it on Audible, and to discover it is narrated by Luke Daniels, who is utterly brilliant! So I listened to Nightshades again before diving into Switchback.

The newly formed Chicago pod of the BPA is having its challenges, to say the least. The Special Agent in Charge is just returning from an extended time away, recovering from a disfiguring knife wound to the face and special hearings in Washington, when another major case hits their desk. The entire staff of a police station in a small Illinois town has been slaughtered, apparently by shades. The pod has to figure out what happened and why in order to stop the killers.

Fair warning to those who care—while the ending is not necessarily a cliffhanger, it made me sit up wide-eyed, cursing and loving Olson at the same time. It sure makes May 2018, the expected publication date of the next novel in the series, seem a LONG way away!

Switchback is another wonderfully entertaining story from Olson, whose previous series I have really enjoyed. Five stars.

Our reviews in this series…

Other recommendations…

Olson’s previous series feel more straight-up urban fantasy than the Nightshade series but are definitely worth checking out if you like UF. They all take place in the same Old World universe. If you’d rather read more paranormal thrillers, check out the Harmony Black series by Craig Schaefer, the Nathaniel Cade series by Christopher Farnsworth, or the Order of the Sanguines series by James Rollins and Rebecca Cantrell.
